During this semester, I have learned not only some of my strengths, but some of my weaknesses too. English 9 has helped me and encouraged me to do things out of my comfort zone, whether it was talking out in the class or having to argue against a topic I didn’t really care or know very much about.
One of my strengths as an English 9 student most definitely had to be reading. Over the course of the semester, I have read over eight books, meaning I have read well over 1,000 pages. My independent reading habits were a strength, I read over 50 pages a day mostly every day, which is exactly how I read and finished over eight books over the semester. Also, most of the articles of the week interested me a lot, making it even easier to annotate and reflect on them. Being required to annotate the articles helped me to read and understand the writing more in depth, also helping to make writing the reflections easy.
Another strength that isn’t quite as strong as the others for me is writing. I didn’t get A’s on every single paper but I didn’t fail them either, I had pretty decent grades on all of my essays and stories. On my personal narrative, I received an A, only being marked down a couple points on conventions. However, on my character analysis essay and also my American dream essay, I didn’t do as well as I felt I could, making those two essays more of a weakness than a strength. On my character analysis essay I received a B and on my American dream essay I received a B+, which I personally think I could have done way better on.
I wouldn’t necessarily call this a strength, but I think that having the Chromebooks this year has definitely made it easier for me to stay more organized and to make sure that all my assignments have been turned in. With almost all of our work being online, it was easier to not have to keep track of a bunch of papers that I would have ended up losing. Instead, all of our work was just a click away. All in all, the Chromebooks made school way more easier than before.
This semester, I have faced a few weaknesses, from, again, not doing the best I felt I could to getting ideas. Coming up with ideas and brainstorming was difficult for me, having to plan out every bit before I could do my assignments just made it harder for me to think of what to write about. Also, speaking in front of the class is not really my thing, even though my group and I got an A- on our debate, we were marked down on our speaking. Speaking in front of the class was hard to do without stuttering or standing there trying to think of a word to describe what you’re trying to say as soon as you possibly can.
Writing was not only a strength, but also a weakness for me this semester. When it came time to writing another essay, I wasn’t always organized. I would start sentences not knowing where I was going to go with them or even what the words I was writing or typing meant. Also, trying to organize my ideas was a whole other struggle. When we were reading Of Mice and Men and Romeo & Juliet, I found it difficult to understand what I was reading, and then having to do an assignment that required you to know what you read made it even more difficult.
This semester of English 9 has made me realize that I have many strengths and many weaknesses. In future English classes, I will need to make more of an effort to make these weaknesses into strengths to make me a better student. Also, I will need to keep my strengths as strengths and not let them fall into being weaknesses.
