90% of study abroad alumni got into their first or second choice graduate school ("100 Reasons to Study Abroad."). If I were to study abroad some time in the duration of my first or second year of my college education, it could help me get into my grad school of choice, helping
me get a better education and help me to get a job in the field I may choose to pursue in. Having the experience from studying abroad, shows some schools that you are interested in learning at and can be easily self-motivated. Even though I am only a freshman in high school , I am learning the steps that I will need to take to make my goal of travelling or studying abroad in college happen.
Many different countries around the world offer many different programs for students that are interested in studying abroad. Studying abroad gives students the opportunity to learn about cultures, people and their ways of living, and languages all around the world that are very different from the one they have grown up with ever since they were born. Education in these countries can be a lot less expensive than my education would be in the U.S. In the US, higher education costs $25,000; the UK on costs roughly $8,000. “The cost of education for an international student in the UK can be generally lower compared to the USA and other countries. Programs in the USA can be $25,000 or more a year in tuition alone. Tuition for the majority of UK higher education institutions generally £6,000 to £7,000 a year - considerably less!” (“Why Study in the UK”). Although, in order to keep the price of education in the UK so cheap, getting an education for students abroad is more expensive than it is for people that live in the UK (Why Study in the UK).
Studying abroad can benefit students in many ways. Future employers like to see that you have had the experience and opportunity to study abroad. Also, grad schools that you may have the willingness to push yourself beyond your comfort zone and have a desire to learn. Studying abroad will give you a once in a lifetime chance, giving you the opportunity to do what others may never have the chance to do. "When you finish your study abroad program and return home, you will return with a new perspective on culture, language skills, a great education, and a willingness to learn. Needless to say, all of these are very attractive to future employers. Many students find that they love their host country so much that they decide to seek work there. If you can relate, you will find that a local education will be very valuable when searching for a potential job in that country." (“10 Benefits to Studying Abroad”).
To study abroad, you can take almost any class you’d want to learn about from either a different style of teaching or just because you want to take it. If you are going to a non-English speaking country, you can take a class for the language you’ll be speaking in that country while you’re in that country. For example, my brother’s experience abroad in Germany was helpful for this paper. While he was abroad this past summer and while he was there he took a German class; even though he was already there. However, in order to receive college credit for the classes you have taken while abroad, you must maintain a gpa above a 2.8 and must pass the class with a C or higher ("Frequently Asked Questions.").
There are many steps that I will need to complete to be successful in achieving my goal of someday travelling to another country and studying abroad. This process will take a lot of time and money, however if you start to save up money little by little, the cost won’t be as much as it would be if you were to wait until you were in college. Also, in order to study abroad, you will also need to work hard and stay determined with school to reach this goal.
