9/8/2018 0 Comments Choice Book BlogWriting Prompt #12In Lisa's Story, I am now on page 54. The section I am in now is mostly reflecting on her time spent as a police officer for the Petoskey Police Department, from the beginning to the end. I am interested to get more into the details about how they figured out who killed her, I am currently still in the background story as of where I am in the book. It is a known fact that she was discriminated against in her workplace on the basis that she was a woman. So far, the book has been focusing a lot on her coworkers so it has me wondering if one of the could possibly be a person of interest in her murder. Not much more has been revealed about her death so far in the book, except for that she was found shot in her home. Writing Prompt #11In Lisa’s Story, I am now on page 30. I am still in the section of her journal, which also includes letter that were sent between her and those who could help her build a discrimination case and also those of her peers. One of the major things being held against her is that she is being accused by an unnamed citizen that supposedly had seen her doing hard drugs in a patrol car, which could never be proven, as the department did everything in its power to not follow the correct steps to having a successful investigation. One example of this that she repeated multiple times is when she was sent to the hospital while on duty to have her blood tested. While getting her blood tested, it was stated that an alcohol swab must not be used, as it could affect the results, when the doctor drawing her blood went ahead and used an alcohol swab anyway. There are suspicions that the head of the department was making everything as difficult as possible in this “investigation” to try and get Lisa to quit. This is supported by him essentially saying that if she just admitted it or left she wouldn’t have to put up with this stuff--different word was used--anymore. Of course she didn’t want to do this because she did not want to prove his view that women were meant to be patrol officers. Writing Prompt #10I have switched books and I am now reading Lisa’s Story, The Interrupted Life Of Petoskey Michigan’s First Female Police Officer. So far, I am on page 11. The book starts out with a copy of what had been written in Lisa’s personal journal that she had kept when she became the first woman police officer in Petoskey, Michigan in 1979. The book is then quick to reveal that Lisa was found dead by a bullet wound in bed in her home in Petoskey 14 years after she started working for the Petoskey Police Department. To the point that I am at through reading her journals, they have consisted of her talking about her experience of her discrimination while employed for the Petoskey Police Department. It’s not verified whether or not her letter listing of what occured was ever sent. It seems that she was discriminated against mostly because she was the youngest police officer in the department and also the only woman at the time. It says how one of her superiors had stated many times that he did not like women patrol officers and because of that, he went on to break protocol on many different procedures in attempt to try and make Lisa look like someone and something she claimed not to be. Writing Prompt #9In the book Eleanor & Park, I don't think I really like any of the characters in this book. Most all of them lack any likable qualities, at least in my opinion. For example, all Eleanor does in this book is feel sorry for herself. Part of it is understandable because her life really does suck, however, that doesn't mean that she has to make it even worse by being negative about every aspect of her life. Then on the other hand, Park tries really hard to try and understand her situation but instead of being open and trying to explain to him, Eleanor refuses to believe that anyone will ever understand how bad her life is. Writing Prompt #8I am on page 176 of Eleanor & Park and I am beginning to predict that it will not have the happiest of endings. Eleanor and Park are both very different characters that are coming from very different backgrounds, even though "opposites attract," I have a feeling that they are really just repelling each other. Eleanor refuses to put any effort into their "relationship," which is really just them hanging out on the bus. This far into the book, when it is Park's perspective, he begins to question if being with Eleanor is really worth all the trouble he's going through to be with her. I predict that they will break up and go their separate ways by the end of the book. Writing Prompt #7Eleanor & Park has the same tone and feeling as every other teen novel, however, it has it's own special characteristics. Being 111 pages into the book, I've come to find that it is the usual love story sequence, but with unlikely characters. It's a "love" story between two young high school students who are both seen as outcasts at times. They are extremely different and come from complete opposite backgrounds, but they bond over reading comics on the bus. The comics then lead them to talk more and more and eventually they develop feelings for one another. At this point in the book, Eleanor has told Park that she can't have feelings for him, that she feels that their lives are too different for her to be with him. With that said, I don't think Park is going to give up that easily on Eleanor, even though he's not fully aware of the extent of her problems in her life. Writing Prompt #6In the book Eleanor & Park, I am on page 65. This book is very different for me because it takes place in the 80's, which isn't a time I was alive to experience. For example, the most "80's" thing that is reoccurring in the book is that cassette tapes are very common and frequently mentioned, as well as some bands from that time. The way the author writes the perspectives is very unique, there are chapters from both Eleanor and Park's perspective, however, they are not written in 1st person, which is different from most books. Most books that switch perspectives of the characters tells those chapters in that characters voice. Writing Prompt #5I finished To All The Boys I've Loved Before and my predictions were true. The fake relationship between Peter and Lara Jean eventually turned into a real relationship. The book is ended with a cliff hanger, considering it was later made into a trilogy. The book ends with Lara Jean and Peter ending the fake relationship after a rumor gets out about the two of them on the class ski trip. In this break up, they realize that both of them really have feelings for each other and Lara Jean tries to make it right by writing Peter a real love letter, however, that's where the book leaves off. Writing Prompt #4In To All The Boys I've Loved Before, I am up to page 247. So far, the two main characters have changed dramatically. As the story develops and Lara Jean and Peter continue to be in their "fake" relationship, it seems as though it is slowly turning into a real relationship. In Lara Jean's eyes, Peter Kavinksy was just a selfish jock who only cared about himself. However, as they continue in the "relationship", she is realizing that he actually has a good personality and isn't just a lacrosse star. Within this realization, I predict that she is starting to develop feelings for him. Writing Prompt #3 So far at the page 146 mark in To All The Boys I've Loved Before, the plot has started to become more developed. At this point in the book, Lara Jean's secret letters have been sent out to the boys they were written about. Including her sister's now ex boyfriend. Once she realizes that he got his letter too, she immediately makes up a lie about her and another boy who got a letter, Peter Kavinsky, saying that they were dating. Kavinsky and Lara Jean made a plan to fake date in order to convince Josh that her feelings are gone and also for Peter to get back at his only girlfriend ever, Gen, whom he had just broken up with. Lara Jean and Gen used to be best friends, but that shattered when Peter became Lara Jean's first kiss in middle school, hence what prompted Lara Jean to write a love letter to him, and as she says, "everybody gets attached to their firsts." It will be interesting to see where Peter and Lara Jean's "relationship" end up going. I feel like there is a very good chance that their 'fake' feelings may end up to actually be real feelings, but it also may be possible that only one of the two will develop those real feelings. Writing Prompt #2My favorite character in To All The Boys I've Loved Before is Lara Jean, the main character. The book is told from her perspective, allowing the reader to go into more depth of knowing her as a character, making it easier to relate to her. Lara Jean is the middle child, always feeling as though she doesn't live up to her older sister, Margot, which is relatable to me with also having a successful older sibling. As most high school girls, Lara Jean develops secret crushes and to deal with those secret crushes, she writes a letter to the crush. She sees writing the letters as a sort of way of getting closure on the crush. Evidently, the letters end up getting sent out to all the crushes, making them not-so-secret crushes. She deals with her biggest secrets being released by almost pretending that they are still her secrets. Writing Prompt #1So far in the book To All The Boys I've Loved Before, it is living up to my expectations. I watched the movie based on the book this summer and it has been interesting to see what details were changed in the movie. All of the characters have the same names and roles so far, but different events and circumstances have happened to get them to the same relationships that occur in the movie. I have a feeling that the book will not end the exact same way as the movie, considering there are 2 other books in the series.
